NuVJ Crash Course

The NuVJ from Numark/Arkaos is a great starter set – $300 gets you a Hardware Controller, 2-Channel Video Mixing Software, and a bunch of clips. Here’s a little guide to basic usage, so you can see how it works whether you’re just curious, planning on picking one up, or you’re heading over to a demo station and want to maximize your time with it.

You’ve got two Decks – A on the left, B on the right. The one in the middle is your preview, this is what’s going out to your audience. Apple-A (or Ctrl-A on a Windows machine) will take you Full-Screen – if you’ve only got one monitor, you won’t be able to see your interface anymore. Press Apple-A (or Ctrl-A) to go back.

Load clips by dragging-and-dropping onto the 3-by-3 cells in each deck. Take a look at the numbers above the decks – you’ll probably have a 1 on the left and a 2 on the right. There’s a knob marked ‘Bank’ that allows you to switch between 16 sets of 9 clips – for a total of 144 clips you can load up at once.

Trigger clips by pressing the buttons in the 3-by-3 grid on the hardware interface. They light up when they’re playing so you know which ones are currently going. Use the crossfader at the bottom of the unit to mix between your two currently-playing clips. The up-and-down sliders control playback speed – you can speed up, slow down and reverse the clips that are playing.

The jog wheels on the lower end of the hardware affect your currently-playing clip on each side, shuttling them back and forth. For precise control, hold down ‘Scratch’ to freeze your clip, and then move the jog wheel around.

Switch to the ‘Sources’ tab in the upper-left hand corner or the NuVJ software and you can drag in dynamic video – like your iSight, webcam and Firewire cameras, Shockwave Flash files, and on-the-fly text generators.

Once you’ve got a setup you like, make sure to go to File > Save As… in your menu bar and save it to your hard drive so you can easily recall it in the future.

There’s more features to the NuVJ, but that’s plenty to get started with. Put on your favorite music, load up those banks, and have some fun!

PS Let me know if there’s any specific video demos you’d like to see with the NuVJ.

are you able to record or otherwise save your performances with the package? also, what is the name of that dongle you are using?

  2. Momo the Monster Says:

Unlike it’s cousin, Arkaos VJ, the NuVJ software does not have built-in event recording. If you wanted to record events, you could try using a software sequencer like Ableton live to capture the midi actions, and then play them back – but I’m not sure if the NuVJ software would respond to that – this warrants an investigation!

The dongle is the official Apple DVI-to-Video dongle. If you have a Mac Notebook, there’s one for your model – but it may be a Mini-VGA or Mini-DVI to-Video, depending on which computer you have.

  3. diedwater Says:

is the screen on the midi controller suppose to show anything other then just the effect/knob names? thats all mine does.

  4. Momo the Monster Says:

It seems like it should, but that’s all I get as well. Honestly, I rarely-to-never look at it when performing.

  5. gavg Says:

how can you play 3 clips at once?

  6. Momo the Monster Says:

You can’t really play 3 clips at once. Technically, if you make your B deck somewhat transparent (by using the Luma Key effect) then you will see through to the background image/movie you selected for your project, but this is not easily changeable so I would not consider it a ’3rd video source’ for most purposes.

  7. gavg Says:

thx, next question, do maybe the recording function comes with an update?
    …sorry for my englisch;)

  8. tjdavis Says:

I seem to get a latency when triggering 640×480 clips (testing with clips provided with NUVJ)… I am just getting ready to move to hi-res so need to know what the best settings are… I have a brand new Intel Duo Core 2.4 ghz with 256mb video card and 2 gb ram… clips (1 channel) coming off a Western Digital External Firewire 800 7200 rpm drive… when I trigger in the grid, playback of the current clip glitches a bit before the next clip comes in thoughts? again this is with the sample footage, I will be converting new footage all weekend

I just got NUVJ and have issues with the controller. After two or three button presses the lights on the controller freeze. The controller seems to work but the button lights don’t change. The LCD screen is useless, but every once and a while gives me some usless info. DONT get me wrong ignoring the controller I LOVE the program. I use Arkaos and love it also. I wrote several emails to Numark to no avail. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tutorial, so much appreciated !
I just purchased NUVJ and I love it, except my controller freezes up every so often and I have to close the program and open again. I’m using a Mac OSX laptop. Is this normal? I’m thinking about returning it …..

    Thanks again, great site !

I'm new to a lot of this and am using NuVJ with my macbook pro (newest model). I've spent a lot of time searching for various forums that can recommend a setup, but have had no luck. What's the best way to connect to a projector without the projector showing what I'm mixing? Under preferences it won't site the projector as a display. I was hoping to not have to send it to a monitor then to a projector. Is this even possible? I have had no luck finding this question answered on any forums. Maybe this is something really obvious I just don't know. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  15. momothemonster Says:

Hey Mr. DJ – I can give a shot to troubleshooting your setup, but no promises. To start, you'll need to give me some system specs – what sort of computer are you using? What software? Which projector?

  16. DJ_Some_Sh_t Says:

I am using a 13" Macbook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory), with Akraos NuVJ. Then I'm connecting the laptop to a projector via VGA. The projector is a LCD Panasonic PT-LB20VU. I'm hoping to get the projector to be the fullscreen display without showing the mixing but still allowing me to see the program. THANKS!

  17. momothemonster Says:

What you need to do is turn off mirroring. On my (first-gen) MacBook Pro, the F7 key will do this (if you're not pressing the Function key). Alternatively, you can go to System Prefs > Displays > Arrangment and uncheck 'Mirror Displays' at the bottom of the panel. You'll see two screens, representing your LCD and your Projector – make sure to move the Menu Bar icon to your LCD if it's not there. That's all it takes!

  18. DJ_Some_Sh_t Says:

Hey! It worked! Took me a little while to finagle it right but I got it. The only thing that is happening now is that I can't seem to find the right resolution to fill the computer screen. So at the bottom of the projection (about 1/8th)
my desktop image is visible. I just made my desktop black so it wouldn't be visible. Any advice for what works best with that? THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

  19. momothemonster Says:

Have you made the external display fullscreen? Command-A is the Mac
    shortcut for this.

  20. DJ_Some_Sh_t Says:

Yep. I did that, but that's when it exposes about 1/8th of the screen at the bottom. The image is full and stretches across the screen but a sliver is seen at the bottom exposing my desktop. Someone told me it's because I didn't have the resolution selected but I've tried a lot of different ones to no avail. The one that exposes a little of the screen at the bottom has the best quality.

  21. momothemonster Says:

You probably want 640×480 (I'm assuming that's the top res of yourclips). Also, turn on 'overscan' for your output and see if thathelps. You can also try posting on the NuVJ forums, where the appdevelopers might know better than I.

  22. craig Says:

hi, i seem to be getting the same problem that you solved.
    but i am using windows!!
i have set my laptop to use extended desktop, but if i choose full screen, i cannot contorl anything else,
is there something im missing. thanks.

  23. craig Says:

also, do i have to have the controller in to do this?, because i would rather use the on screen controls.
    thanks :)

  24. soberg Says:

im also having the same problem with windows 7…any help?

  25. momothemonster Says:

For technical help, try the NuVJ forums- http://www.arkaos.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=24&am

  26. shaun Says:

you need to load the program up on your extended screen if this does not work check which screen is coming up as your primary monitor this should solve the problem on windows

  27. davet Says:

my question is does the audio have to be from an input TO the computer for the video to respond? or can it be internal audio?
my Nuvj is in the mail and will be here soon. also the whole extended desktop issue. im wondering should i go ahead and use it on my windows pc.. or my mac. mac would probably suit me better, but for the extended desktop. ive never done that with my mac. i have 2 plasma tvs to output to and an extra lcd monitor.
and if anyone could answer the audio input issue, could you maybe help me along with what type of input and how to set that up? thanks so much.

  28. shaun Says:

i just turn up the mic option on the top and pick up the music source from the amps speakers with setting the output you need to put on extend screen then go into options and put your laptop screen as the primary screen then go into nuvj and set preferences in display to the second screen for playback to your projector or tv

  29. neill Says:

Hi mate ,____When i Toggle full screen it comes up on my laptop and not the controller on the projector screen , Have i got the output options wrong .. ?? I cant figure it out

  30. momothemonster Says:

You want to make sure you're in extended desktop mode, and your computer is set as the main screen, with your projector as the secondary. For more info, try posting on the official NuVJ forum: http://www.arkaos.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=24
